Jan has always been fascinated by how cells take decisions — how they know what to do, when, and where — to build complex organisms.

After studying biology at LMU Munich, a Ph.D. between Munich and Jena, and a postdoctoral fellowship at the Salk Institute, he led an independent group at the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in Tübingen. He is now full professor and head of the Department of Stem Cell Biology at the Centre for Organismal Studies, Heidelberg University, and Dean of the Faculty of Biosciences.

His research has been recognised by the Lautenschläger Research Prize, an ERC Synergy Grant, an ERC Starting Grant, election to EMBO, the President’s Medal of the Society for Experimental Biology, the EMBO Young Investigator Award, and an HFSP Career Development Award.
